Essential Tools to Support Remote Work

Employers and employees worldwide are quickly finding themselves navigating how to implement remote work quickly and efficiently due to the impact of Coronavirus (COVID-19). The concept of remote work or working from home may be new to some employers but it has been a standard component for years now with other employers who we can all learn from including Automattic and GitLab.

Automattic, an open sourced technology company has an entire workforce of over 900 people in over 70 countries. Matt Mullenweg, CEO, believes working from home is good for business and good for his workforce.

Gitlab, an open core company which develops software development lifecycle used by more than 100,000 organizations has an entire workforce of over 1,200 people in over 65 countries. An abundance of resources are available on their website on remote work including a guide on remote working for startups, maintaining communication habits and more that has led their organization to success with a remote workforce.

Consultation and resources regarding remote work are also available from the Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM). SHRM, a professional human resources association, has been and continues to be an essential resource for employers to consult regarding all things human resources including remote work.

As many of us continue to navigate through the transition to remote work, leveraging the abundance of tools to support remote teams is essential to ensuring increased productivity, efficient time management, effective communication and even maintaining workplace culture.

Here are 11 tools that that can make the transition to remote work a successful transition:

Slack

Slack is a messaging platform for organizing conversations, sharing files and more and has become a widely popular communication hub.

Zoom

Zoom is a video platform great for one-on-one or group meetings or conference calls.

Calendly

Calendly is a scheduling platform great for one-on-one or group scheduling. It’s a widely popular scheduling tool due to it’s ease and ability to integrate with calendars to verify availability.

Asana

Asana is a project management focused platform that is great to get organized, stay on track and meet deadlines.

Trello

Trello is a project management and task management focused platform and is widely popular among people worldwide.

Skitch

Skitch is associated with EverNote and is a great tool to communicate visually with friends, family and coworkers. It’s a great tool for remote team to annotate, markup and sketch out ideas.

Box

Box is a cloud collaboration tool to utilize internally or externally.

Google Drive

Google Drive is a great tool to utilize for documents including spreadsheets, presentations.

DropBox

Dropbox is a widely popular cloud storage tool for storing and sharing documents.

Todoist is project management and task management focused platform used by many to organize, plan and collaborate on projects and tasks.

While Coronavirus (COVID-19) has led to a sudden disruption in many of our professional lives, being proactive and utilizing tools as these can be highly instrumental to success with remote work and additional organization goals as many of us seek to utilize modern tools and strategies.
